Job description
Allen & York are thrilled to be partnering with the British Horseracing Authority for whom sustainability has been identified as a key pillar within the cross-industry strategy. They are now looking to recruit a Senior Environmental professional to scope out a cross industry sustainability strategy for the sector to support the wider strategic objectives.
For a big picture visionary with well-honed engagement and communications skills this could be just the sort of opportunity you have been waiting for and which comes up just occasionally.

Against a backdrop of independent and diverse stakeholder entities this role presents an exciting opportunity for someone operating at a senior level, who's comfortable in a complex, multi stakeholder business and is familiar with the process of developing a strategy. This would include an initial macro level gap analysis with a view to making significant progress in year 1 through to cementing key priorities and moving the project forward on resource and budget requirements. If you then feel as though you could take on the responsibility of developing and implementing the strategy following the initial year, then this is definitely possible once further funding has been achieved.
A large part of this role will be to scope out the future strategy in sustainability, so you'll be a strong communicator, engaging with numerous key stakeholders, all with different agendas and priorities (and views), with the ability to listen, educate and influence and pull together the differing challenges and opinions. You'll use your sound understanding of the legal and regulatory requirements related to sustainability and the projected changes, as well as a strong commercial acumen as they're looking to future proof the sport against a number of environmental imperatives which may require changes to how they operate and to enhance the industries part in national and global environmental efforts.
Combined with your technical knowledge of sustainability you will be able to demonstrate your ability to produce a sustainability strategy combined with experience of change management, writing papers and presentations, the ability to establish strong relationships with various stakeholders and an understanding of the groups that may be worth collaborating with. You will be hands on, work with a sense of urgency and be able to cope under pressure and prioritise activities.
With offices in London but racecourses and related businesses across the country, location is not an overriding factor but you will need to meet with various stakeholders so travel may well be required for face-to-face meetings.
If you have an interest or background in sport/horseracing, that would be beneficial but it's not essential, experience working with rural communities including farmers and landowners would similarly be beneficial…what is important is your desire to work collaboratively with the industry and know what and how to identify and address key sustainability themes. So, if this sounds like the role for you and you'd like to find out more, please email bha@allen-york.com to find out more.
The role has been funded thanks to the generous support of The Racing Foundation.
